So what did I do? Found a used pair of 10" Dr Z speakers and bought them. All these time thought about JBL's and others.. From what I read, these are his design and suppose to sound as full as the 12"... maybe I'll need his cab as well for a proper designed tone. Anyway, has anyone tried the Dr Z 2X10 extension cab? I just figured, for the price might as well try them out.

I contacted the company and am able to obtain a prewired empty cabinet that I can just plug in the speakers. I'm not saving much money, and should go the route of a generic cab but their cabs seem to be to well made as the MM cabs. I may take out the Eminance speakers from the MM210 and try these out while waiting for the cab. My guess is they will be fine since any reputable speaker will probably sound good with the MM amps. By the way, Kendrick amps are also selling off their 10" speakers until they are all gone. I may grab a pair for the hell of it as well.

I put in the Dr Z speakers and played through them for a bit. They are different. They seem to be darker but don't have much of low end, the deep switch helps. They are heavier and so it makes the 2X10 heavier than usual. I may just put in the originals back in and get a cabinet for them. It made me wonder if the originals are beginning to go since these seem clearer. I guess I'll mess with them some more.

Below is the description of his 10" speaker from his web page.

I have developed my own 10 inch speaker, it will be incorporated in the new 2X10 Ghia combo, the Z-28 4X10, the 4X10 open back cab, and the MAZ -38 and Jr. 2X10 reverb combo's. I utilized a process that I learned from my friend Ted Weber at Weber VST: that is incorporate the response of a sample speaker, them tweak the voice coil, mag circuit, and dust cap to achieve a optimum design. On the Z 10 inch speaker, I utilize an English made cone and voice coil, along with a basket and magnet from Eminence, and assemble them in house. I select a different dust cap depending on the amp that I install them in. There has been a lot of time in the development of this speaker, but I 'm very happy with the results, it gives me control of the speakers tone, and no delays for speaker deliveries. Look for a 12 inch design in the near future.

I put back in the Eminence speakers in and I like them a lot better, at least in this 210-65. The ohm ratings for them are running 6.5 so I'm assuming they are fine. The Dr Z are 16 ohm speakers, which explained the lack of low end.. and of course I forgot to set the switch to 8 ohms when I was trying them out... so stupid of me. The magnets are really strong on the Z's compared to the Eminences. Interesting MM used all 8 mounting screws, whereas the Z's just used 4.

Well I guess you are better off pounding together a box since shipping so damn high. It would have been better to have bought a completed one and besides should have checked the ohm rating on these speakers. Thus ends a badly conceived plan.
