I have recently added this on to my collection. What strikes me as unusual is that there are no badges and the grill cloth is black. I have had the amp apart to clean and polish and there is absolutely no evidence that the grill cloth has ever been changed or badges attached. It appears as 100% original with the possible exception of a changed power switch (still checking on that one.) Logic would indicate that this os the 161st
HD-130 (or any Musicman) ever produced. Please advise if you believe otherwise. Could use some help on this one. Thanks, Larry

Never saw a factory black and I sold the damned things back in 76 or so but that doesn't mean it didn't exist. If you have to, pull the grill cloth up at the lower front corner and see if there are screw holes for the badge under the cloth. That's a dead giveaway and you only have to pull up the corner but or course, you have to take the baffle out(pain). I've got one that is a B0000129 that I thought was pretty early until I hear about yours!

Never heard of a "badgeless" or black cloth MM, either. It HAS to have been modded by someone after factory issue.

Turns out the grillcloth was changed. I've since located a UOS (used old stock) of '74 to exchange it with. The power switch was also returned back to an original. Can anyone tell me if the serial number designated the 161st HD 130 or the 161st Musicman overall?

Who knows? I have seen some B series with low numbers without heat shields. It either means someone removed them or the early ones were without them. Also, number B000251 has slightly different shaped corner protectors than slightly later numbers. As they say, numbers don't tell whole story, though I am unclear as to why. I should think pot codes would be accurate to a degree.

Off topic, but anyone notice different tones between models? I have some 75-76-ish heads still with the AX PI and they start to sound like 'Trans Am' by Hagar.... Things like this give rise to many questions, such as, do fresh cap jobs change the sound?
