After a couple of minutes when I play thru it, the thing just cuts out. Dead. Pilot lite and tubes are glowing so I have some power... A lite RAP on top of the amp (very hi tech) usually results in a temporary return to normal, temporary... She's got new tubes, new doghouse caps and I'm getting ready to do the rest of the cap job. Just got my caps from mouser... any thoughts? Hope a tranny ain't goin', would it act like that? Planning on reflowing the board when I cap it. Peace, Carl.

Sounds electro mechanical(fancy name for it's broke!). Anyway, you are almost going to have to get it open and chopstick it to find the loose or corroded compenent. REMEMBER-IT'S DANGEROUS. 6-700 volts bouncing around it there. I'm SURE you tried different entry points? Preamp in and second input jack? Just trying to localize it. If it REALLY goes dead, the PT filament winding could still be running and the mains are disconnected but that would be rare and spooky. You are going to HAVE to go inside no matter what, even if it's just to look at the PS and see if it's connected. Usually a transformers either in or out. Smacking it(my favorite option) usually indicates corrosion or loose contact or a cracked resistor.

thanks I didn't think a transformer could do that but it seems like its all you hear about is "my caps made my tranny go..." Yeah early on I learned a lot of problems ARE mechanical... main input jacks make no difference but I'm not sure about HOW to try the preamp in... I'll keep reading...
